Traditional Owners' and Travellers' Tales – stories to inspire reconciliation
Mervyn JohnsonI believe there is an urgency to pass on vital knowledge to others to encourage growth towards reconciliation, understanding and breaking down the barriers which have been entrenched in our communities over the last 200 year.
On Saturday 24 June 2006, the Mariposa Cultural Folk Dancers, a dedicated group of Filipino women worked with Judy Pippen, a Community Development Worker with Bundaberg Community Development Inc, to put together a presentation entitled: Traditional Owners' and Travellers' Tales.
Judy Pippen, Organiser, Bundaberg Community Development Inc.The event: 'Traditional Owners' and Travellers' Tales' was deemed a great success by the 85 people who attended. It meant a lot to the migrants and historical inhabitants to hear first hand the experience of the Traditional Owners and of each other. It brought family members closer together and increased respect across the board. All agreed that there was a little more humanity and a little more understanding in the air afterwards.
Here are the stories of three of the Aboriginal elders. They were written by Dianne Esmond of the Bundaberg Writers Group after interviews with the men. They performed their stories at the event.
