Frequently asked questions

Who can apply?

If you meet the awards criteria, live in Queensland and your business or organisation is operating in Queensland, you can apply for the Reconciliation Awards for Business.

Do I have to nominate myself or can I nominate someone I know?

Either - you can nominate your own business, organisation, project or initiative or you can nominate one that you know about.

What is the definition of a 'business'?

A business includes a trade or profession operated for the purpose of making a profit. To operate a business in Queensland under a name other your own, the name must be registered with the Office of Fair Trading.

What is the definition of a 'community organisation'?

A community organisation is an organisation formed to promote the interests of a particular community or community group. Community organisations are typically funded through a mix of private and public (ie. Government) donations.

What is the definition of a 'partnership'?

A partnership is a relationship (usually governed by a partnership agreement) between organisations or individuals working on a project or initiative.

Can Government Departments and Community Development Employment projects apply?

Government departments, agencies and Community Development Employment Projects are eligible in the Partnership category.

In which categories can a business submit a nomination?

As a business you are eligible to enter the Emerging Business, Established Business or Partnership category. A business is ineligible to enter the Community Organisation category.

As a community organisation, what categories can I enter?

As a community organisation you are eligible to enter the Community Organisation and Partnership categories only.

How long should my nomination be?

Written nominations are normally 1-3 pages but should not exceed 5 pages. If you are submitting a video or audio tape, applications should be under thirty (30) minutes.

Can I supply other pieces of information plus my written nomination?

Supporting materials such as newspaper articles, letters of appreciation, publicity photos or videos of your achievements may be included and will not count towards the 5 page limit for nominations.

Who will be judging the awards?

Judging panels will comprise a range of Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous industry and community group representatives, academics and others with an understanding of the reconciliation process. Each panel will assess nominations against both general and specific awards criteria.

Will judges definitely recognise an award recipient in each category?

According to the quality of nominations, the judging panel may not award a particular category. Alternatively, they may decide to choose more than one award recipient in a particular category because of the standard of nominations.

When will I find out whether I've won?

Award recipients of the Reconciliation Awards for Business will be announced at a presentation evening at Parliament House on 29 May 2008.
